Korea off while two venues unconfirmed in revised V8ST 2013 schedule
V8 SuperTourers have officially shelved plans to run a race at the new Autopia circuit in South Korea after issuing a revised 2013 calendar.
Aside from deciding against venturing offshore in the championship’s second season, the other loose ends are two circuits where commercial deals are yet to be signed off.
However there remains a guaranteed seven-round calendar with all dates cemented by the series.
The other significant change is confirmation of the cancellation of a stadium-style event planned for Auckland as reported by Speedcafe.co.nz last month CLICK HERE to read original story.
In its place is a sprint round booked for Pukekohe from May 25-26 with the series returning to the historic venue for the final round from December 7-8.
The second round that was originally listed at Ruapuna from March 9-10 is now one of the rounds where the venue is yet to be determined as is round six which is listed as the South Island Spring Festival.
It is understood that officials are still working toward the South Island enduro being at the Highlands Park complex at Cromwell.
V8ST says that negotiations for the aforementioned circuits yet to be advised are on track to be concluded by mid-January although in the instance of the March meeting it leaves teams and fans only two months to plan travel arrangements.
With Pukekohe not being available in the first few months of 2013 due to heavy upgrades before the Australian V8 Supercars return to the venue in April, V8 SuperTourers have been dealt a challenge in its scheduling of venues.
With all of the four North Island circuits booked 12 months ahead, V8 SuperTourers have been faced with a dilemma in trying to work out dates that don’t clash with Australian V8 Supercars.
“We have a commitment to our teams that our calendar will not clash with any Australian V8 Supercar dates,” V8 SuperTourers managing director Mark Petch announced to Speedcafe.co.nz
“Next year we will also have our own inaugural V8ST champion Scott McLaughlin (confirmed for Fujitsu-backed Garry Rogers Motorsport) doing double duty as well as Steve Owen and Greg Murphy at both the Bathurst and Phillip Island rounds.”
Petch says that due to a date clash with V8 Supercars, the series has lost the opportunity to host its planned Manfeild event.
“It’s a shame but when you are told that we have to make decisions 12 months out, we are always going to have potential conflict in available dates.”
Three of the rounds will run under the category’s new one-day sprint racing schedule.
Final entries, expected to increase by between two to four cars over 2012, are yet to be disclosed.
